UAE’s Reminder: Always Give Way to Emergency Vehicles!
In the UAE, one thing that truly stands out is how drivers usually give way to emergency vehicles. Whether it’s an ambulance, police patrol, or civil defence truck—when the sirens are on and the lights are flashing—motorists move aside. It’s a simple act, but one that can mean the difference between life and death. To keep this habit strong and consistent, authorities in Abu Dhabi have launched a fresh reminder to all road users.
‘Don’t Hesitate – Give Way Immediately’ Campaign
In partnership with the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, Abu Dhabi Police have kicked off a six-month awareness campaign called “Don’t Hesitate – Give Way Immediately.” The goal is to reinforce road safety and educate the public on the laws around giving way to emergency vehicles. These vehicles are often racing against time to save lives, respond to fires, or handle critical accidents—and every second counts.
Hefty Fines for Not Cooperating
The message is clear: don’t block the way. If you do, the consequences are serious. Motorists who fail to give way to emergency vehicles face:
A fine of Dh3,000
6 black points on their license
Vehicle impoundment for 30 days
In more severe cases, like blocking access to Civil Defence vehicles around warehouses, the fine can shoot up to Dh50,000. If this happens during harsh weather conditions, you’ll face an extra Dh1,000 fine, 4 more black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment.
Accidents Caused by Not Giving Way
According to the Ministry of Interior, 325 accidents in the UAE were linked to motorists not giving way. The breakdown is:
Dubai: 160
Abu Dhabi: 107
Ajman: 31
Sharjah: 17
Ras Al Khaimah: 5
Umm Al Quwain: 3
Fujairah: 2
That’s 325 moments where a little courtesy could have prevented danger.
What You Should Do When You See an Emergency Vehicle
Here’s a quick checklist for every driver:
Keep the radio volume low to hear approaching sirens
Stay calm and alert—don’t panic or make sudden moves
Avoid blocking hard shoulders or intersections
Slow down, signal, and move to the right safely
Always yield—even if the traffic light is green
Wait for the emergency vehicle to fully pass before merging back
When Approaching Emergency Scenes
Slow down near stopped emergency vehicles
Be cautious of staff on foot
Leave space for more emergency vehicles arriving
Follow any directions from traffic officials
And please—don’t rubberneck!
Some Absolute No-Gos
Never drive on or block hard shoulders
Don’t tailgate or race emergency vehicles
Never jump a red light to “help” them through
Don’t speed or make unsafe maneuvers
Final Thoughts
Abu Dhabi Police are making it clear: road safety is everyone’s responsibility. A few seconds of your time could mean someone else gets to live. Let’s keep the UAE among the safest places in the world—one clear lane at a time.
