UAE to sight moon today for Eid Al Adha.

Eid Al Adha is just around the corner, and once again, Muslims around the world are turning their eyes to the skies. The crescent moon sighting will mark the beginning of the Islamic month Dhul Hijjah, which in turn determines two major dates: Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha.

Why moon sighting matters

Moon sighting has always been a tradition in Islam. It goes back to a hadith of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), who said: “Do not fast unless you see the (crescent) moon, and do not break your fast until you see the (crescent) moon.” This is why many Muslims still rely on actually seeing the moon to mark the beginning and end of holy months.

Can anyone spot the crescent?

Yes! In the UAE, the Crescent Sighting Committee officially gathers after sunset. But it’s not just up to experts—anyone who sees the moon is encouraged to report it. On May 27, all residents are welcome to look out for the crescent.

When will Eid be?

If the moon is spotted on May 27, Dhul Hijjah will start on May 28, and Eid Al Adha will fall on June 6. If not, Eid will be on June 7. Arafah Day, which is the holiest day for Muslims, will be on Dhul Hijjah 9—one day before Eid.

Get ready for a long weekend

No matter when the moon is sighted, UAE residents are in for a 4-day weekend. Arafah Day will be a public holiday, followed by a 3-day break for Eid Al Adha. Perfect time to plan a getaway or enjoy some rest with loved ones.
