UAE Introduces New Student Attendance Guidelines for 2025-26.

The UAE Ministry of Education has announced new student attendance rules for the 2025-2026 academic year. The policy aims to strengthen student commitment to learning, reduce unexcused absences, and increase parental involvement.

Immediate Parent Notification.

Schools are now required to inform parents right away if a child is absent from class. This ensures guardians remain fully aware of their child’s attendance record.

Warning and Escalation System.

A warning will be issued after just one unexcused absence. If absences reach 15 days, the student’s case will be referred to the competent authorities and child protection entities, along with the guardian.

Consequences of Excessive Absences.

Students who exceed 15 unexcused absences in a school year may be required to repeat the entire academic year. However, parents are allowed to file an appeal within five working days of being notified.

Fridays and Holiday Absences.

Absences that fall on Fridays, or on days before or after official holidays, will be counted as two days instead of one. This rule discourages students from extending weekends or holidays.

Maximum Absence Limit.

The updated system sets a maximum of five unexcused absences per term and 15 per academic year. Any violations beyond this limit will trigger the set penalties.

Focus on Academic Success.

The new guidelines highlight the importance of consistent attendance for academic performance and success. Earlier this year, the Ministry also revised the academic plan by limiting centralised tests to the first and third semesters, while allowing schools to conduct their own summative assessments.
