UAE Announces Road Closures for Dubai Metro Blue Line and Etihad Rail Projects.
The UAE is pushing forward with two of its most ambitious infrastructure projects—Dubai Metro Blue Line and Etihad Rail. These mega developments aim to enhance public transport, reduce traffic congestion, and improve overall quality of life for residents. However, they also come with temporary road closures and diversions that motorists should be aware of.
Why the Closures?
As part of efforts to modernise the country’s transport network, authorities have started closing key roads to make way for construction. The Blue Line will be the first metro line to cross the Dubai Creek and is expected to reduce traffic congestion by 20%, while Etihad Rail will connect all seven emirates and link the UAE to the wider GCC region.
Sharjah Road Closures: Mleiha Road
In Sharjah, streets connecting Mleiha Road and Sharjah Ring Road, near University Bridge, have been closed. This is to make space for Etihad Rail construction, which will be a game-changer for daily commuters traveling to other emirates, especially Dubai.
Closure Duration: July 1 to August 30
Expected Impact: Heavier traffic in surrounding areas; alternative routes advised
Dubai Road Closures: Mirdif
Dubai Metro Blue Line construction is ongoing in the Mirdif area. The first station—Emaar Station—is set to become the tallest metro station in the world.
The roundabout between 5th and 8th Street near City Centre Mirdif is closed.
Diversions: From 5th to 8th Street (towards City Centre Mirdif) and from 8th to 5th Street (towards Algeria Street)
Alternative access: New entry roads to mall parking and U-turns near Ghoroob Square
Closures in Academic City
With Dubai Academy City expected to serve over 50,000 students by 2029, construction work is now affecting roads in the area.
Street 63 is closed in both directions in front of the German International School
Access still available to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street via alternative routes
Entry/exit points adjusted for school traffic
Looking Ahead
While the closures may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits of these transport projects are immense. The Dubai Metro Blue Line is set to launch by September 9, 2029, offering airport access in just 20 minutes. Etihad Rail, once complete, will revolutionise inter-emirate travel and reduce the country’s dependence on private vehicles.
