Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a major addition to the city’s road network — a new 800-metre tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street designed to significantly ease traffic and improve connectivity. The project is part of the broader Umm Suqeim Street Development initiative, aimed at accommodating Dubai’s rapid urban expansion.

Key Connection Between Major Highways.

The newly opened tunnel features four lanes in each direction and connects four of Dubai’s most vital highways: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. This strategic link is expected to drastically enhance east–west traffic flow while integrating seamlessly with north–south corridors.

Travel Time Slashed by Over Half.

One of the most impactful benefits of the new tunnel is a 61% reduction in travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road — from 9.7 minutes to just 3.8 minutes. It also boosts the capacity of Umm Suqeim Street to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Serving Over One Million Residents.

The development serves key residential and commercial areas, including Dubai Hills, Arjan, Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Science Park. Together, these communities are home to more than one million people, making the project a major improvement for daily commuters and residents alike.

Smart Tech Meets Urban Planning.

RTA used cutting-edge technologies to ensure efficient project execution. Drones powered by artificial intelligence were deployed to monitor progress, resulting in faster decision-making and increased accuracy. This approach helped double the on-site presence, cut field survey times by 60%, and improved monitoring by 40%.

Part of a Larger Vision!

This tunnel is the latest in a series of upgrades along the 16 km Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor. Previous phases included new bridges and signalised intersections to support growing developments like Dubai Hills Mall. The continued enhancements align with RTA’s vision to future-proof Dubai’s road infrastructure and support its growing population.
