Ministry of Education Bans Junk Food in UAE School Cafeterias.

The UAE Ministry of Education has announced a nationwide ban on junk food in school cafeterias, a move aimed at protecting students’ health and well-being. Schools across the country are now required to remove unhealthy food options and encourage healthier eating habits among children.

What Foods Are Banned?

Under the new guidelines, schools are no longer allowed to sell or permit students to bring items such as processed meats (mortadella, sausages), instant noodles, soft drinks, chips, sugary snacks like chocolate and packaged biscuits, as well as cakes, pastries high in fat and sugar, and flavoured nuts. Peanuts and peanut-based products have also been prohibited due to allergy risks.

Why the Ban Matters?

The ministry stated that poor diets can negatively affect children’s concentration, academic performance, and long-term health. International health experts warn that consuming foods high in fat, sugar, and preservatives increases the risk of obesity and chronic diseases later in life.

Parents’ Role in Healthy Habits.

Parents have been urged to provide balanced meals at home and avoid sending children to school with unhealthy snacks. Breakfast was highlighted as the most important meal of the school day, giving children energy, boosting memory, and helping reduce cravings for junk food.

A Shared Responsibility.

The Ministry of Education stressed that both schools and families share responsibility in shaping healthy eating habits. By instilling these values early, the UAE aims to raise a generation that excels academically and enjoys long-term physical and mental well-being.
