Free Driverless Taxi Rides Now Available from Saadiyat & Yas Island to Zayed International Airport
Getting to the airport in Abu Dhabi just got a major upgrade—commuters can now hop into a fully driverless taxi from Saadiyat or Yas Island and ride all the way to Zayed International Airport. Even better? The rides are completely free (for now)!
This move is part of Abu Dhabi’s growing commitment to smart, sustainable transport solutions. What started as a local service within Yas and Saadiyat Islands has now expanded to include one of the capital’s most important landmarks—making travel more convenient for both residents and visitors.
According to Fatima Al Hantoubi from Abu Dhabi Mobility, this expansion is a big milestone in integrating advanced technologies into the city’s transport system. Since launching in 2021, the autonomous vehicles have completed over 30,000 successful trips and covered more than 430,000 kilometers—without a single reported accident. Impressive, right?
The cars operate at Level 4 autonomy, meaning they’re fully self-driving but still include a safety operator during this pilot phase. Each vehicle is packed with high-end tech like LiDAR, radar, GPS, and cameras that provide a full 360-degree view of the surroundings. They’re also linked to real-time monitoring systems to keep operations safe and smooth.
Anyone in the operational zones can access the service using the Txai app, where you can book your ride, track the vehicle, and check arrival times. For now, it’s open to the public and completely free—so if you’ve ever wanted to try a driverless car, now’s your chance!
