Dubai Set to Launch Driverless Taxis: Autonomous Trials Begin This Year.

Dubai is accelerating towards a future of smart mobility with the launch of pilot trials for autonomous vehicles scheduled later this year. This initiative marks a significant step toward introducing a fully driverless commercial taxi service by 2026.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai, a global leader in autonomous driving technology. This partnership will lead the emirate’s autonomous vehicle pilot programme, aimed at transforming the future of transportation in the region.

Pony.ai has developed seventh-generation autonomous vehicles in collaboration with major automotive manufacturers including Toyota, GAC, and BAIC. These vehicles are equipped with advanced AI systems and a robust sensor suite featuring lidars, radars, and cameras, designed for safe and accurate navigation across various road and weather conditions. Pony.ai has also partnered with Tencent and Alibaba to integrate its robotaxi services into everyday apps like WeChat and Alipay, offering users easy access to smart mobility solutions.

This move is aligned with Dubai’s ambitious goal to make 25% of all trips within the emirate autonomous by 2030. The autonomous mobility strategy is a key part of Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy and the city’s broader vision for sustainability and innovation in transport.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the deployment of autonomous taxis will help improve road safety, reduce congestion, and enhance convenience for residents and visitors. He noted that integrating self-driving taxis into the public transport system will also support first and last-mile connectivity, making daily commutes smoother and more efficient.

Pony.ai CFO Dr. Leo Wang highlighted the significance of this partnership, saying it showcases the company’s commitment to deploying Level 4 autonomous driving technology in key global markets. He added that this collaboration with Dubai RTA sets the foundation for a smarter transport ecosystem across the MENA region.

Dubai’s journey toward a driverless future has officially begun—paving the way for innovation, efficiency, and safer roads in the years to come.
