Dubai Launches Dh650 Million Project to Transform Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary.

Dubai has officially unveiled a major Dh650 million development project to upgrade and enhance the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the city’s most treasured natural reserves. This ambitious initiative, announced by Dubai Municipality, is set to significantly boost both environmental impact and tourism, aiming to attract 250,000 to 300,000 visitors annually — a six-fold increase from current figures.

A Vision to Enrich Biodiversity and Eco-Tourism.

Located near Dubai’s city center, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a thriving wetland ecosystem recognized globally as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. Home to over 450 species of flora and fauna, including the iconic greater flamingos, the sanctuary plays a crucial role in preserving regional biodiversity.

Major Enhancements in Phase One.

The first phase of the project, already contracted and set for completion by the end of next year, includes a 144% expansion of water bodies, increasing their area to 74 hectares. In addition, 10 hectares of mudflats (salt flats) will be introduced, creating vital feeding grounds for migratory birds and supporting marine and plant life.

This phase is also expected to deliver substantial environmental benefits, such as a 60% increase in carbon dioxide absorption, reinforcing the sanctuary’s role in climate resilience.

Focus on Habitat and Green Space Expansion.

The second phase will center on expanding green spaces, planting native vegetation, and enhancing habitats to attract more wildlife. These steps will further cement Ras Al Khor’s status as a key environmental and educational destination in the heart of Dubai.

Improved Visitor Experience.

To ensure a meaningful and sustainable visit, the project includes the upgrade of walkways, bird hides, and educational signage, offering the public a deeper connection with nature while maintaining conservation efforts.
