Dubai pilots new system linking traffic fines to visa renewals.

Authorities in Dubai are piloting a new system that links traffic fine payments to the process of issuing or renewing residency visas. Under this initiative, residents will need to settle any outstanding traffic fines before they can complete their visa-related procedures.

The goal is to encourage compliance, not restrict services

Lt Gen Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), said the initiative aims to remind residents to follow traffic rules and pay fines—not to block their access to visa services. “The system allows for flexibility depending on each case,” he added.

Fines must be cleared or paid in instalments before completing visa steps

While the new system does not stop the visa process completely, it prompts individuals to pay fines either in full or through instalment plans before finalising their residency transactions.

Thousands of cases reviewed before pilot launch

Officials confirmed that thousands of cases were studied to ensure the system is practical, user-friendly, and considerate of residents’ varying financial situations. Those visiting visa service centres will be guided through the payment process.

Not yet rolled out across all service centres

The system is still in its pilot phase and hasn’t been implemented everywhere. For example, the GDRFA centre at Dubai Airport is not yet applying the system. Authorities will evaluate the pilot before expanding it further.
